Nottingham East Midlands Information
Nottingham is the largest city in the East Midlands. Its history is filled with legends, yet it is also a cosmopolitan and modern city.
The ruined Nottingham Castle dominates the skyline. This was built, on a narrow sandstone ridge, in 1068 by William the Conqueror, and it has a fascinating history associated with the Legend of Robin Hood. The original castle was burned down during the English Civil War, and today you can only see the medieval gatehouse, guard room and dungeon. In its place was built a ducal mansion, which now has an exhibition showing the city's turbulent history, as well as an excellent museum and art gallery.
There are some beautiful gardens to wander through as well, and you can go up to the roof of the museum for some stunning views of Nottinghamshire. Then you can walk along to the Tales of Robin Hood attraction, and travel back in time and lee through the forest to escape the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, or take part in a medieval banquet!
Other famous people from Nottingham include Byron, Lawrence, William Booth (founder of the Salvation Army), and George Green, the important mathematician.
There's also lots of history underground! There is a labyrinth of over 400 caves, which have been cut out of the soft Sherwood sandstone over the last 750 years. Visit the Caves of Nottingham attraction, and you can learn how they were used as factories, pub cellars, storerooms, dwellings or slums, air raid shelter and a tannery.
Lace-making has played a large part in Nottingham's history. It was at the forefront of pioneering the great lace-making machines that took its production from the cottages to the factories. Visit the Museum of Nottingham Lace, located in what was the hub of the world's 19th century lace industry, known as the Lace Market. The Lace Centre is housed in one of the city's oldest buildings, the Severns Building.
You can go to the Brewhouse Yard Museum for more history, and the Galleries of Justice in the Shire Hall, where you can learn all about English justice through the ages, from the Victorian courtroom and country gaol to today's investigations. The Museum of Costume and Textiles details the development of these industries.
Other local attractions include The American Adventure Theme Park, a Wildlife Park, the Wind in the Willows attraction, and the National Space Centre, dedicated to astronomy and space science.
Nottingham is great for shopping, and has a great nightlife, with excellent restaurants and pubs, plus the Victorian Theatre Royal and the modern Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham Playhouse and the Malt Cross Music Hall. Or you could go skating at the superb ice rink, or walk in the beautiful countryside that surrounds the city.
